The history of the game of Cornhole
Cornhole also known as Corn Hole Toss, Baggo and Beanbag Toss was originally played in the USA in the late 19 century and developed through many changes until the mid 1970s when the modern game emerged. In 2005 the American Cornhole Organisation (ACO) was established and are the governing body for the sport of Cornhole.
American Cornhole Association (ACA) is an organisation who sole mission is to help cornhole players enjoy the game of cornhole and according to its website one of the best ways to achieve this is to have high quality equipment to play on. It would appear that their focus is more on the enjoyment of the game than on being a sanctioning body of the sport. However, ACA does have its own rules “Official Cornhole Rules“ which are used throughout the sport and can be downloaded from their website:-
www.playcornhole.org
Cornhole is rapidly growing in popularity in both the UK and Europe and is played in Pubs, Clubs, homes both indoors and outdoors and any suitable level outdoor space such as parks, beaches etc.
How to play
If you are playing with a single board put two markers on the ground at a distance of 27 feet from the front of the board for adults ( regulation distance ) and 21 feet or less for children depending on their ages.
Players stand behind the markers and take alternate throws trying to land the bags on the board or to put the bag through the hole. In doubles play each team member throws two bags at the board. Any bag which hits the ground first and ends up on the board is a foul and the bag must be removed before the opponent pitches his next bag
After all eight bags have been pitched, any bags left on the surface of the board score one point and any bags through the hole score three points. When the scores of each player or team have been added the highest score minus the opponents score wins the innings i.e. … Blue 7 points and Yellow 5 points …… Blue scores 2
When playing with two boards the bags are then pitched to the other board and when playing with a single board the players move back to the markers to pitch again. The scoring player from the previous innings throws first. If no one scored, the player who pitched first in the previous innings pitches second in the next innings.
The first player or team to reach or exceed 21 points is the winner of the game.
Don’t be afraid to make up your own rules for family fun e.g. standing on one foot while holding a beer in the other hand which is guaranteed to produce some amazing shots !
For the serious players download the full ACA rules and whoa betide any player who makes a foul pitch.
